A Week to Remember:
Sarah Lydic Captures First National Title

Sarah Lydic went wire-to-wire to capture her first national golf title, adding another impressive achievement to a summer résumé she has been building toward for years.
The junior from Wake Forest University entered the final round with a commanding nine-stroke lead and knew maintaining her focus would be the key to finishing the job. Lydic said she concentrated on staying committed to positive swing thoughts rather than worrying about her tendency to miss shots to the right under pressure. The arrival of her mother during the first round also brought a sense of calm that helped the Demon Deacon remain composed.
Despite her sizable advantage, Lydic was fully aware that leads can disappear quickly at Occano, where gusting winds often make scoring difficult. The conditions were especially challenging on the front nine, with many approach shots into par fours measuring more than 160 yards. She managed a birdie on the 353-yard par-4 fourth hole and paired it with a couple of bogeys to post a 1-over-par 37 on the inward side of the front nine.
After making the turn, Lydic settled into a rhythm and began to believe the championship was hers to win. Birdies on holes 12, 15, and 16 helped separate her further from the field as the finish line came into view. She also credited her playing partners throughout the week, noting that good pairings always contribute to a positive tournament experience.
Walking up the 18th fairway, Lydic's thoughts turned to her grandparents, who live along her route home. She joked that a celebratory ice cream cone would be in order. Her first phone call, however, was destined for Wake Forest head coach Kim Lewellen, who shared in the excitement of seeing her player reach the winner's circle.
Lydic finished the tournament at 214, securing an eight-stroke victory. Elizabeth Ryu placed second with a 222, while Anna Swan finished third at 225.

LYDIC Maintains Commanding Lead Heading Into Final Round of Women's Eastern Amateur

Sarah Lydic entered Wednesday's second round of the Women's Eastern Amateur holding a five-stroke advantage, and for much of the day appeared poised to put the championship further out of reach.
Lydic wasted little time expanding her lead, opening with a birdie on the 363-yard par-4 first hole. However, a steady southwest wind of 10 to 15 mph, as forecasted, made scoring increasingly difficult throughout the round and challenged the entire field.
After a bogey at the second, Lydic bounced back with another birdie on the par-5 fifth. A bogey at the sixth left her with an even-par 36 on the outward nine.
The inward side proved more demanding. Despite adding a birdie, Lydic carded four bogeys over her final nine holes, posting a 39 and finishing the day with a three-over-par 75.
While not as sharp as her opening-round performance, Lydic's two-day total was more than enough to maintain control of the championship. She will take a commanding nine-stroke lead into Thursday's final round.
New Bern's Baker Hudson and Elizabeth Ryu share second place at 151, nine shots behind the leader and needing a strong final-round charge to close the gap.
With one round remaining, Lydic remains firmly in the driver's seat as she seeks to capture the Women's Eastern Amateur title.
Final-round tee times begin at 8 a.m. Thursday.

WEDNESDAYS ACTION

"Lydic Leads the Charge in Women's Eastern Golf Opener"
The winds had laid down, and the Occano Golf Course was more receptive as compared to the 30-mile wind gusts out of the north that prevailed for Monday’s practice round. Well, at least for Sarah Lydic, the junior from Wake Forest who is coming off a fourth-place finish at last week’s Southern Amateur. Occano’s almost 6300 yards has a topography much like Sarah’s home course, and with Mom in tow, cheering on every shot, Lydic came out relaxed and firing.
With birdies at holes one, two, and three, it was looking like a ladies’ play day at her home course. Sarah’s lone bogie came at the par four 379-yard sixth hole. Lydic noted that this week’s greens were very similar to last week’s, which gave her confidence in reading and executing her putts. When practicing on the greens, she says, “I do stroke, then speed, and then you work your way around, which helps to ingrain confidence.” Lydic turned with a 33 and then kept her tempo, firing at holes, sinking a birdie at the par five eleventh and the par four twelfth. Sarah admitted that when she’s in the hunt, she gets a bit tight and the swing isn’t as fluid, but a small swing change a few days ago has everything going in the right direction. The tip from coach John, she said, “Just try to pause at the top and try to feel like you're throwing your arms down and just hit it.” Everything was in concert today for the Demon Deacon, closing with a two under 34 and a final round 67, which gives her a five-stroke lead going into day two. Trinity Ahing fired an even par 72 and is in second place with Baker Hudson and Elizabeth Ryu tied for third at 74.
